Landscaping in the North Shore
Landscaping for North Shore homes, from Mosman to Wahroonga: sandstone, slopes and established trees.
Landscaping in the North Shore
Sandstone, sloping blocks and big established trees define a lot of North Shore gardens. Canopy means shade, roots mean care with levels and paving, and many blocks fall towards the house, which makes drainage critical.
We design around what’s already there. Natural sandstone becomes walls and steps, shady corners get planting that suits them, and the levels are set so water moves away from the house.
Many North Shore homes are older, with gardens that have grown over decades. Often the best result keeps the mature trees and the character of the garden, and fixes what’s underneath: tired lawns, failing walls and drainage that no longer copes.
Local conditions we plan for
- Established trees. Big trees bring shade and roots. We plan levels, paving and drainage to protect root zones, and check council rules before working near them.
- Sandstone. Natural sandstone outcrops and old sandstone walls are part of the look. We work with them and use sandstone for new walls and steps.
- Blocks that fall to the house. Water heads straight for the back door. Regrading and drainage carry it around and away from the house.
- Shade. Canopy and taller neighbouring homes mean shady lawns and beds, so grass and plants are chosen for part shade.
Common projects in the North Shore
- Sandstone walls and steps on sloping blocks
- Drainage that keeps water away from the house
- Shade-tolerant gardens, hedging and screening
- Lawns chosen for part-shade
- Sandstone and stone terraces for entertaining
- Garden renovations for established homes
Suburbs we cover
We work across the North Shore, including Mosman, Neutral Bay, Cremorne, Lane Cove, Chatswood, Willoughby, Roseville, Lindfield, Killara, Gordon, Pymble, Turramurra, St Ives and Wahroonga. Not sure if we cover your street? Call 0423 830 285.
Councils and approvals
The North Shore spans several councils, including North Sydney, Mosman, Willoughby, Lane Cove and Ku-ring-gai, each with its own tree protection and development rules. Removing or pruning a protected tree, and building taller walls, can need approval. We check before we start.
How it works
- Call or send an enquiry. Tell us what you have in mind and where you are.
- Site visit. We walk the block with you and look at the levels, soil, drainage and access.
- Itemised quote. A quote written for your block, with a timeline, before anything starts.
- The build. Our own crew builds it in the right order: drainage and structure first, finishes last.
- Handover. The site cleaned up and a walk-through, with care instructions for the lawn, plants and irrigation.
One crew, quoted to your site
Every project starts with a site visit and an itemised quote written for your block. The people who quote your job are the people who build it.

North Shore: local questions
Can you work around established trees?
Yes. We plan levels, paving and drainage to protect root zones. Some trees are protected by council, so we check before working near them.
What grass grows in shade?
Shade-tolerant buffalo varieties handle part shade far better than couch. Under heavy canopy, garden beds or paving can be the better choice.
Can you repair an old sandstone wall?
Often, yes. We’ll assess whether it can be re-set and drained, or whether it needs rebuilding, and reuse the original sandstone where we can.
Water comes towards our house when it rains. What can be done?
Regrading the ground to fall away from the house, plus drains to carry the water to your stormwater, fixes most of these problems.
Do you cover the Upper North Shore?
Yes, from Lindfield and Killara through to Pymble, Turramurra, St Ives and Wahroonga, as well as the Lower North Shore.
Still got a question? Ask the person who’d build it.
They took the time to listen to my ideas, offered thoughtful suggestions, and turned what was a pretty dull space into something that actually feels like an outdoor retreat.
You can tell they actually care about the details, everything looks clean and well finished. They used good quality materials too, not the cheap stuff.
They showed up on time, worked efficiently, and paid attention to the small details. The paving and lawn came out great, and they left the place spotless after.
Always listening carefully to instructions and making sure the work was completed exactly as requested.
