Landscaping in the Inner West

Backyard makeovers for Inner West terraces and cottages, from Balmain to Summer Hill.

Landscaping in the Inner West

Narrow terrace backyards, tight side access and older drainage are the norm in the Inner West. Many yards have one way in, and some only through the house, so the build has to be planned around access from day one.

Older properties often have drainage problems hiding under the surface. We sort those out first, then build a backyard that makes the most of a small footprint.

Whether it’s a Federation cottage in Haberfield, a worker’s terrace in Newtown or a semi in Marrickville, the goal is usually the same: a low-maintenance backyard with somewhere to sit, some green and no more water pooling at the back door.

Local conditions we plan for

  • Narrow terrace backyards. Long, thin yards need careful layout so they feel like a series of spaces, not a corridor.
  • Limited access. Many yards have no side access, so materials, machinery and waste are planned around getting in and out, sometimes through the house.
  • Older drainage. Old clay pipes, cracked pits and yards that fall towards the house are common. We check and fix the drainage before anything is built on top.
  • Clay soil. Heavy clay in much of the Inner West holds water, so soil preparation matters for lawns and garden beds.

Common projects in the Inner West

Suburbs we cover

We work across the Inner West, including Balmain, Rozelle, Lilyfield, Leichhardt, Annandale, Glebe, Newtown, Enmore, Stanmore, Petersham, Marrickville, Dulwich Hill, Ashfield, Summer Hill and Haberfield. Not sure if we cover your street? Call 0423 830 285.

Councils and approvals

Most of the area is covered by Inner West Council, with Glebe and parts of Newtown in the City of Sydney. Many streets are in heritage conservation areas, which mainly affect what’s visible from the street. Backyard landscaping usually doesn’t need approval, and we’ll tell you if yours does.

How it works

  1. Call or send an enquiry. Tell us what you have in mind and where you are.
  2. Site visit. We walk the block with you and look at the levels, soil, drainage and access.
  3. Itemised quote. A quote written for your block, with a timeline, before anything starts.
  4. The build. Our own crew builds it in the right order: drainage and structure first, finishes last.
  5. Handover. The site cleaned up and a walk-through, with care instructions for the lawn, plants and irrigation.

One crew, quoted to your site

Every project starts with a site visit and an itemised quote written for your block. The people who quote your job are the people who build it.

FAQ

Inner West: local questions

We plan materials, deliveries and removal around the access you have, including carrying through by hand where we have to. We’ll work it out at the site visit.

Usually, yes. Regrading the levels and adding drainage to carry the water away fixes most of these problems.

Yes. Breaking the yard into zones, with a paved area near the house, planting and a focal point at the end, makes a long, thin yard feel more generous.

Sometimes. A small lawn needs good sun and drainage. If the yard is shady or heavily used, paving and planting can work better.

Yes. Backyard work is rarely affected, but if anything visible from the street is changing, we’ll check the rules first.
