The Hills District has bigger blocks, heavy clay soils, and plenty of new homes with yards that are still bare dirt. Clay holds water, so drainage and soil preparation decide whether a lawn thrives or turns to mud.

A larger block gives you room for a proper entertaining area, a pool surround, a lawn for the kids and gardens that frame it all. We plan the whole yard, then build it in the right order.

Local conditions we plan for

• Heavy clay soil. Clay holds water and sets hard in summer. Subsoil drainage and a proper soil base under lawns and beds make the difference.
• New-build yards. New homes often hand over with compacted fill, builder’s rubble and no drainage. We clear the site and build the yard from the ground up.
• Sloping blocks. Many blocks step down from the street or towards the back fence, so retaining walls and levels are planned early.
• Pools and big entertaining areas. Larger blocks mean pool surrounds and large paved areas, which create run-off that needs drainage.

Councils and approvals

The Hills District is covered mainly by The Hills Shire Council, with Cherrybrook and parts of West Pennant Hills in Hornsby Shire. New estates can also have their own landscaping rules for front yards. We’ll check what applies to your block.
